Nicolas Roeg's 'The Witches' Grand High Witch Could Have Starred Cher, Linda Blair, or S
The 1990 film, 'The Witches', a reworking of Roald Dahl's book 'The Witches' considered a few other actresses to play the Grand High Witch. Dahl's first pick was Cher, but because of scheduling conflicts (Mermaids) she was unable to do the film. According to Wikipedia "Eartha Kitt, Fiona Fullerton, Geneviève Bujold, Starr Andreeff, Olivia Hussey, Sigourney Weaver, Frances Conroy, and Liza Minnelli were all at some point considered for the part of The Grand High Witch prior to Anjelica Huston’s casting. Huston’s casting later satisfied Dahl." IMDB has reported that also Anne Bancroft, Sigourney Weaver, Linda Blair, Faye Dunaway, Susan Sarandon, Jodie Foster, Vanessa Redgrave, Frances Conroy, and Liza Minnelli were all at some point considered for the part of The Grand High Witch." The film which did poorly at the box office has a rare 100% at Rotten Tomatoes. This is the last movie Jim Henson worked on before his death. The story follows a little boy 'Luke' and his grandmother on holiday. They stay at a hotel that's hosting a witch convention. At the meeting the witches make a plan to turn all the children in England into mice. Luke and his grandmother fight against the witches to save all the children. 'The Witches' which is a family-friendly/horror movie definitely delivers the horror. Often too scary for children, it has a strong cult following. It's hard to imagine anyone different then Anjelica Huston playing the evil Grand High Witch. This year Guillermo del Toro and Alfonso Cuaron said they were interested in remaking 'The Witches' starring Jennifer Lopez.
